Few things in life are as important as your health, and it is important that you take an active role in promoting wellness. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Now that a new year is underway, it is time to evaluate your priorities – and your wellness should be at the top of the list. Preventative care is the best way to defend yourself against serious medical conditions and even life-threatening diseases. Women need to make their yearly wellness exams a set event on their calendars each year as a promise to themselves that they will make wellness a priority.

As soon as a young woman starts her period, she should start seeing a gynecologist once a year for a wellness exam. Even as a women’s medical practice that sees women every day, we understand that this is not your most favorite appointment of the year. Yet, these annual wellness exams are critical to your overall health.

What’s Included in a Wellness Exam?

To fully appreciate why annual wellness exams are so important, it helps to understand exactly what goes on during your visit. Once you are called back for your appointment, you will have your vitals checked. A nurse will then take you to a private exam room where you will speak with your provider about your personal medical history, family medical history, and any symptoms of concern you may be experiencing. It is important to speak openly about your health, as this is the perfect time to discuss intimate issues.

Your wellness appointment will also consist of the following three parts:

  • Breast exam
  • Exam of genitalia and pelvic area
  • Pap Smear

These exams are done as precautionary measures to look for signs of cancer and other abnormalities that may pose a threat to your health.

The greatest benefit of women’s wellness exams is that they are designed to provide early detection of any issues that may arise. Tens of thousands of women have been able to save their lives through wellness exams that spot issues while they are still in their earliest stages.

If it has been longer than a year since your last wellness exam, make wellness your goal in 2021. Contact Marietta OB/GYN Affiliates, P.A. today to schedule your appointment.
