While many women experience cramping before or during their menstrual cycle, some women experience severely painful pelvic pain that occurs just before menstruation. Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of endometrial tissue, similar to that which lines the uterine wall, that is located outside of the uterus. Endometriosis is a common gynecologic disorder affecting a large number of women. Living with this condition can be difficult, especially for those who are also dealing with infertility. Understanding the basics of this disease can allow you to find a qualified physician to help you minimize your discomfort.

Endometriosis is classified by stages: I – minimal, II – mild, III – moderate, IV – severe. The majority of cases of endometriosis are classified as minimal or mild; moderate and severe cases typically result in cysts which can rupture and add excruciating pain on top of the condition. An accurate diagnosis is necessary to treat endometriosis.

The most common symptoms of this disease include:

  • Pelvic pain that typically occurs just before menstruation and lessens afterwards
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Cramping during intercourse
  • Pain during pelvic examinations
  • Cramping or painful discomfort during bowel movements
  • Infertility

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is time to make an appointment with your trusted gynecologist. Endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose, and many women who do not suffer from infertility often choose to overlook their symptoms. However, this is not something that you must suffer through. Laparoscopy is the only way to accurately confirm endometriosis, and your gynecologist can perform this procedure.
